The Formation
A discussion was done in late 2001 by few academic staff members and few graduates whom got graduated from the department with idea of realizing the long felt need in forming an alumni association for the graduates of the Department of Textile & Clothing Technology. As a result a first call was made to the graduates whom were it the industry on 11th January 2002. It was the base for the 1stmeeting which held on 9th February 2002.Many suggestions were there in proposing a name for the community, where higher favour was there to use the word “Alumini” as a part of it. Finally it was named as Moratuwa University Textile Association (MUTA) with the agreement of all whom were present at that time. As an initial beginning for the new born association a drafted constitution was finalized with thorough discussions, which was followed by the election of office bearers for the committee. Mr. N. G. H de Silva became the first President of the novel committee while Mr.DeepthaWijegunawardena was elected as the Secretary. At the same time Mr.N. L. Wanigatungewas elected as the Senior Treasurer of the association. Mr.Dilhan Fernando was a prominent figure behind all of the initializations of the first meeting. The advices given by Prof.Lakdas D. Fernando and the guidance and the guidance and support provided by Dr.Nirmali de Silva who was then the Head of the Department, was a great strength for a fresh beginning.

The first event of MUTA
MUTA going in line with its objectives in “widening the interest and associated knowledge” organized a guest lecture on "Needles”. The guest speech was organized by Bobbin (pvt) Ltd.

The first AGM
It was a challenge and a new experience to make sure that the 1st AGM a gallant event to mark in the history of MUTA. This is the reason why a special committee was formed in this regard, headed by Prof.Lakdas Fernando in organizing the first ever AGM of MUTA. The funds for the event were drawn from advertisements which were displayed in the souvenir and also as sponsorship banners.

With an immense effort from everyone who got involved, the first AGM was held in a grand scale at Hotel Galadari on 13th September 2003. The success of the unity was shown form the beginning itself which showed by an attendance of over 300 with more than 90graduates and rest filled with staff members, few invites from the industry and the students. No doubt that this did realty gave a boost to MUTA to proceed with its mission. On the same day Mr. N. L. Wanigatunge was elected as the second president of MUTA while Mr. ShyamalWijesinghe was elected as the secretary and Dr.GaminiLanarolle as the Treasurer. Following is a brief outline of the MUTA AGMs held so far.

1st AGM - Held at Hotel Galadari (13th Sep 2003)
- Mr. N. L. Wanigatunge was elected as the 2nd president
- Over 300 participants were presents

2nd AGM - Hotel Mount Lavinia (18th Sep 2004)
- Dr. U. S. W. Gunasekera was elected as the 3rdpresident
- 300 participants were presents

3rd AGM - Austasia Sports Club, Thalawathugoda
- Dr.SanathJayawardana was elected as the 4thpresident

4th AGM - HNB Towers Colombo ()
- Dr. G. L. D. Wickramasinghe was elected as the 4thpresident

5th AGM - Berjaya Mount Royal Beach Hotel
- Dr.GaminiLanarolle was elected as the 6th president
